Planning your Best Homeschool Year Yet – Looking Back to Move Forwards!
Welcome to Part 1 of my Best Homeschool Year Yet series.
If you are looking to schedule a new homeschool year, and would really love to to make this year a year of passion, fun, love and inspiration – then you are in the right place. Let me walk you through my process of designing your best homeschool year yet.
Getting Started
Before you start to think about the coming year, it is worth taking the time to look at previous homeschooling years.
What worked really well for you in the past? Why did it stop working?
In the years you have homeschooled you will have gained experience about what works for your family and what doesn’t. What things did you do that you all enjoyed, had fun with, and learned a lot from?
Has the way you have been doing things worked for everyone? Or are you ready for a change? Examining the past will give you some ideas about the future. Even if things haven’t been going well for you, there may be some moments that worked well that you can capture and use for the future.
As an example, we have done some fabulous projects that we have all enjoyed (such as making our own periodic table and designing a skyscraper).
I know that mostly these projects come from unexpected quarters – I blogged about this in my Seeds of Learning post. So I have learned that I need to stay open to opportunities. But I also have a tendency to get overwhelmed by possibilities and end up not doing anything! So I use my planned spontaneity workbook to stay on track and be ready for anything!
If you are new to homeschooling then you have a blank slate to work with (yeah!). Stay flexible and read as much as you can about homeschooling. You will find some approaches resonate with you, and some you will recognize as not for you. And I am sure if you think over your past experiences together as a family you will get some clues too.
Take some time to think about the past and what lessons you can use to help you design your future. Leave me a comment about what has been working for you and what hasn’t.
Until next time 🙂
